Summer Events at the British Library

Fake news, David Bowie, Los Angeles, folk music, Michael Palin & Jane Austen...

1 July 2017 | Book tickets

This summer, there are a huge array of exciting talks and events taking place at the British Library, inspired by their fascinating exhibitions and featuring big names like Vivienne Westwood, Michael Palin, Maureen Duffy, Hunter Davies and Nobel Peace Prize Winner Herta Müller.

Highlights of the season include a a nostalgic evening of hip-hop inspired poems and songs with Africa Writes: Rap Party on Friday 30 June. In July, the Library marks the bicentenary of Jane Austen’s death by asking four writers to explain her enduring appeal in What's So Great About Austen? Later in the summer, celebrate traditional folk music with Folk Song in England. Discover the links between visual work and authority in an illustrated talk Picturing India: People, Places and the East India Company from historian John McAleer on 18 August. Journalist and commentator Jonathan Freedland explores the recent Fake News trend on 7 September. The following day, broadcaster Simon Fanshawe is joined by writers Julie Burchill and Darryl Bullock to discuss the history of LGBT music-makers in David Bowie Made Me Gay. At the end of the month, Will Self talks to Chris Beckett, editor of a new edition of J G Ballard’s Crash about the controversial novel, followed by a screening of the David Cronenberg 1996 film adaptation.
