The theatre centre announces playwriting award shortlist

The shortlist for the Theatre Centre’s £6,000 prize Brian Way Award for Best Play for Young Audiences 2012 has just been announced.
 
“The calibre of this year’s entries has exceeded our expectations and it’ll be tough to decide on a winner.” Natalie Wilson, Theatre Centre Artistic Director
 
This Brian Way Award is intended to raise the profile of young people’s theatre, encouraging recognition and respect at home an abroad. This year there were 41 submissions of plays for young audiences that have been professionally produced or professionally commissioned in England and Wales.
 
The shortlisted entries are:
 
·       ‘The Machine Gunners’ by Ali Taylor produced by Polka Theatre
·       ‘Get Santa!’ by Anthony Neilson and Nick Powell produced by the Royal Court
·       ‘Holloway Jones’ by Evan Placey produced by Synergy Theatre Project
·       ‘Little Miracles’ by Joy Wilkinson produced by Islington Community Theatre
·       ‘The Great Bear of the North’ by Jude Emmet produced by Red Dog Productions
 
The winner will be chosen by a panel of five judges and will be announced on Thursday 19 April 2012 at Theatre Centre’s Award Ceremony at Shoreditch Town Hall, London. This event will also celebrate the winners of the Adrienne Benham Award and Dorothy L. Sayers Award for the new talent in Playwriting and Acting in the field of Young People’s Theatre.
