Caro Emerald At The Royal Albert Hall

25 February 2013 Tom Butler

Not many musicians can set a national record for weeks at number one in the album charts. Dutch jazz singer Caro Emerald did just that, with her debut album, putting Michael Jackson's Thriller into second place! Ahead of her return to London and her concert at the Royal Albert Hall, London Calling's Tom Butler was fortunate enough to catch up with her in the midst of her tour.

London Calling: How would you describe your style to the uninitiated?

Caro Emerald: I would say jazzpop, or pop songs based on hip hop beats with 40’s/50’ influences

LC: Who were the musical influences in your house growing up? Have they changed at all now?

CE: Well, when I grew up there was only my moms classical piano playing and the classical collection of my dad! I only heard pop music in school! It wasn’t until I started singing lessons that I discovered jazz as a genre. During my Conservatory years I discovered even more: Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Motown, Earth Wind & Fire, but also Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone. Nowadays I listen a lot to different styles, from R&B to Pop to Jazz to Funk. Beyoncé, Rihanna, Lana Del Rey, Jamie Lideel, James Morrison. Should I go on?!

LC: You performed quite a lot in London last year, have you a favourite venue/memory from your time here?

CE: My night at Shepherds Bush was legendary! I have such good memories of that night! The venue was so pretty and the audience heart warming!

LC: Is there anywhere in Lonodn that you would love to perform at? Apart from the Royal Albert Hall of course!

CE: How about the O2 Arena!

LC: What’s new that we can expect from the tour?

CE: I will be playing some new songs from the upcoming album The Shocking Miss Emerald! So this will be an exclusive preview for the fans! Can’t wait!

LC: Can we expect a new album anytime soon?

CE: We’re in the middle of finishing up my upcoming album The Shocking Miss Emerald, it will be released somewhere in spring, more details and dates will follow...

LC: What was the hardest role in setting up your own label and selling yourself? Agent? Manager? Publicist?

CE: I would say being the artist and my own manager at the same time. I don’t do it all by myself, I work closely with my partners Jan and David, and the wonderful Grandmono team. Sometimes it can be very heard to make a decision from both personal and business perspective at the same time.

LC: Are there artists out there at the minute who you would like to collaborate with?

CE: Justin Timberlake! Or Robbie Williams.

LC: There seems to be a 40’s and 50’s influence to your outfits when performing. True? Where does this come from?

CE: Well, I want to create a look that supports the music, everything you hear and see should be merging together! Since my music is very 40’s and 50’s inspired, I like to go all out with cool outfits!

LC: What were your New Year’s resolutions? Are they still going strong?

CE: To work out even more and to eat healthy! And yes, so far I’m doing great!

Caro Emerald will be performing at the Royal Albert Hall on Monday 11th March. For more information and to book tickets please click here.
