Ellie Taylor: Tits & Giggles

15 April 2013 Tom Butler

Ellie Taylor is many things. Well known as the TV host of Snog, Marry, Avoid, she's also a successful stand-up and part-time Nutella ambassador. Just don't call her a comedienne! London Calling's Tom Butler caught up with her ahead of her performance at Tits & Giggles, a comedy charity evening to support CoppaFeel.

London Calling: When did you first hear about the charity CoppaFeel? And how did you come to be involved with Tits & Giggles?

Ellie Taylor: The charity asked me if I'd be a part of the evening and of course I said yes. There is a long line of breast cancer sufferers in my family so it was a pretty easy decision to make. Plus the gig's line up is awesome.

LC: How much does Funny Women help young aspiring comediennes break into the industry? Are there more opportunities as a result of the organisation

ET: Hey don't you 'ienne' me! I am a comedian! I hate the word 'comedienne' - it always feels a bit like a verbal pat on the head for 'having a good try'. There's loads of female comics out there gigging and working hard every night of the week. Annoyingly, there are still fewer opportunities for female comics compared to our colleagues with penises, but we plough on, and slowly the lay of the land changes but just a bit slower in the TV land where boys rule OK.

LC: What can the Tits & Giggles audience expect from the evening?

ET: Hopefully more giggles than tits. Unless I get very drunk before my set and then who knows.

LC: Who were your comedic influences growing up?

ET: I loved Victoria Wood. She has such a beautiful use of language.

LC: How did you start out?

ET: I saw a friend do a five minute set and thought 'I can do that'. So I did. It was a perfect way for me to get my fix of showing off in a way that didn't involve criminal actions. Comedy saved me from 9-5 despair. It also robbed me of any chance of getting a mortgage but the less I dwell on that the better. Who needs a pension after all?

LC: What was your ‘big break’ moment?

ET: Not sure I've had it yet! No, I got onto a TV comedy talent show and did alright, and at the same time I got an agent. Hard work, plus talent, plus people taking a punt on an unknown entity has led me to the weird and fortunate position I am in today.

LC: How would you describe your comedy to the uninitiated?

ET: Silly. Tall. Fun.

LC: Who’s your favourite comedian on the circuit at the minute?

ET: Sara Pascoe has a brilliantly warped way of looking at the world that I really enjoy listening to.

LC: Your Twitter profile hints at a ‘dedication’ to Nutella. How and when did this come about? Is it a full blown addiction?

ET: It's an addiction I go through every few months. I buy a jar and then go home to indulge in a pretty hot and steamy three way affair between me, the jar and a spoon. It lasts 24 hours and it's blissful.

LC: What is it that you love about Snog, Marry, Avoid?

ET: It's such good fun. I get to chat to people and dress up like an idiot. It's perfect.

LC: Do you have any friends that could do with a ‘make-under’?

Ha! As if I'd ever say in print!

LC: What’s up next for you?

ET: Heading to the Edinburgh festival in August with my show Ellievision. It will be fun but I should warn you that I will probably use the word 'amazeballs', and no, it won't be ironic.

LC: Where’s your favourite place in London?

ET: The closet shop to my house that sells nutella.

LC: Finally, and most importantly, what’s your favourite cheese?

ET: Halloumi. Any cheese that squeaks is a friend of mine!

Tits & Giggles is at The Bloomsbury Theatre on Tuesday 7th May. For more information and to book tickets please click here.
