Interview with comedian Russell Kane

19 October 2014 Jessica Johnston

“I climbed into a hot tub with Nicole Scherzinger. She didn’t even know.”

Multi-talented writer and performer Russell Kane has firmly established himself as one of the best comics in the UK Today. He has also written a play and a novel... Oh and he’s about to star in a film. Fresh from his critically acclaimed Smallness Tour, Kane is now gearing up to host a sensational line-up of top class stand up at This Is Comedy 2014. Amidst his chaotic schedule, London Calling managed to grab 60-seconds with the Essex-boy for some quick fire questions...

London Calling: How did you get into stand-up?

Russell Kane: I was dared by a colleague.

LC: Who is you favourite comedian?

RK: Sarah Millican or Daniel Kitson. Both great.

LC: You shared a few intriguing anecdotes with audiences on your recent Smallness Tour - something about a hot tub...

RK: Yes. I climbed into a hot tub with Nicole Scherzinger. She didn’t even know.

LC: Where do you take inspiration from for your material?

RK: Life. It’s big and complicated and I love living it.

LC: Are there any subjects you wouldn’t talk about?

RK: Anything that would cause actual pain.

LC: You have already written a play and a novel, so what’s next on the list?

RK: Sitcom, film, presidency then the Playboy mansion as a "seeding rod".

LC: Where do you feel most comfortable – on stage, on TV or with pen in hand?

RK: Stage. When it’s going well. If not - in the toilet rocking back and forth.

LC: What’s the best thing about living in Essex?

RK: I’m just on the border. Woodford. East London. I love Epping Forest. And bunnies!

LC: You once changed your name to Lord Russell Grineau by Deed Poll, what were the perks of self-ennoblement?

RK: People actually bowed their heads in deference. It was disturbing.

LC: You have been on the comedy circuit for a good few years now, do you still get stage fright?

RK: 8 years. And yes, I still use Imodium.

LC: What do you feel strongly about?

RK: Love, sex. And (unconnected) family, loyalty and of course books.

LC: Later this year, you will be hosting This Is Comedy 2014... What can audiences expect?

RK: A showcase of this year’s hottest acts hosted by ME!

LC: There will be plenty of exciting new stand-ups performing at this year’s event, whose one to watch?

RK: They are all headliners. Every one of them would usually close the night. It’s that much of a banging event.

LC: Any exciting projects in the pipeline?

RK: Ooohhh. I couldn’t possibly say… but I’m in a movie. There. I said it.

LC: How do you feel about Nick Grimshaw stealing your look?

RK: I stole his. And his washing.

LC: Finally, do you have any Essex-boy words of wisdom for us…

RK: “Let’s just cuddle together under the duvet, we don’t have to do it.”

Russell Kane will be hosting This Is Comedy 2014 at London’s Vaudeville Theatre on 1st December. Tickets cost £22.50, available here.
