A Guide to London Tree Week 2017

30 May 2017 Will Rathbone

It's London Tree Week! As if you didn’t already know. From May 27 till June 4 there are tons of tree-related activities taking places in London’s woodlands and high streets. We’re big fans of trees here at London Calling, so we can’t wait to give up some time to celebrate our wooden, hundreds of years-old neighbours by walking, drawing and even listening to them. What a tree-mendous week it’s going to be.

Great North Wood Tree Walk in Biggin Wood

The once vast Great North Wood encompassed swathes of South London, and Biggin Hill is one of the few surviving areas standing today. This walk, which starts at the Tennis Courts off Biggin Hill, delves into the history of Biggin Wood and teaches guests how to identify trees from characteristics like flower, leaves or bark.

The Great North Wood Tree Walk in Biggin Wood, Norbury, takes place on Thursday June 1, from 7 - 8:30pm. Entry is free, but a suggested donation of £3 to London Wildlife Trust is encouraged.

Tottenham Trees Tree Drawing Workshop

Part of Tottenham’s joint celebration of London Tree Week, and Nobel Peace Laureate Wangari Maathai, Sunday’s celebration includes a special Tree Drawing Workshop at the Marcus Garvey Library in Seven Sisters with artist and tree enthusiast Joanne Rogers. Guests will receive tips on technique, a guided tour of Tottenham Green, and ample opportunity to draw trees from life.

Tottenham Trees Tree Drawing Workshop takes place at Marcus Garvey Library on Sunday June 4 from 12-2pm. Entry is free!

Audio trail – Listen to the Trees

Taking place in Potters Field Park all week, this audio guide gives five trees the chance to speak on a different, pun-tastic, subject: Treelaxation, Poetree, Biodiversitree, Histree and Air Qualitree. Potters Field Park is a hidden oasis, nestled beside City Hall, which is well worth discovering, and this sonic experience is the perfect opportunity to do so.

Audio Trail – Listen to the Trees takes place in Potters Field Park, Southwark, every day from May 27 – June 4, 10am – 4pm. Entry is free!

Secret Trees of Abney Park

The Tree Musketeers will lead a group round Hackney’s Abney Park Cemetery Nature Reserve, introducing guests to some of London’s rarest trees. The tour lasts 90mins, and is completely free to attend. You’ll learn the secrets tucked away in this beautiful woodland – from the spectacular Loddiges oak grove to species you may never even have heard of.

Secret Trees of Abney Park takes place on Wednesday May 31. Meet at 7pm at Stoke Newington High Street Gates. Entry is free!

Sydenham Wood Evening Tree Walk

On the other side of town, join a conservation officer on this guided tour of Sydenham Hill Wood, part of the ancient landscape of the Great North Wood. The landscape was formed around 10,000 years ago as the last Ice Age ended, and the area is steeped in history with some beautiful examples of native tree species playing host to a wide variety of wildlife.

Sydenham Wood Evening Tree Walk takes place on Wednesday May 31 from 7-9pm. Entry is free, though a suggested donation of £2 to London Wildlife Trust is recommended.
