Review: Brunch at Heads + Tails

8 May 2019

We already know Heads + Tails are masters when it comes to an evening of cocktails, whether you're upstairs in their bright and airy Heads bar or down in the glamorous Tails basement. So when we heard they would be introducing a brunch menu upstairs in Heads on the weekends, we jumped at the chance to go and see what treats there were on offer.

And don’t worry: you won’t have to miss out on Heads + Tailstempting cocktail selection at brunchtime. You can indulge in a Bloody Mary, of course (just be prepared for the pepperiness - it’ll certainly wake you up), or go for one of several spritzes. The West End Spritz, with Aperol, clementine and bergamot cordial, is tart and fresh. All cocktails are just £5, so you won’t leave with your wallet too much lighter, and if you’re not feeling quite ready for a cocktail, you can still get fancy with a freshly squeezed clementine juice, just that little bit sweeter and more indulgent than a classic OJ.

The basic concept of the brunch is as follows: there are four basic main dishes, and then a whole bunch of extras which you’re encouraged to add to your plate. Por ejemplo, we ordered the (vegan!) aubergine shakshuka with guacamole and primped it with a side of scrambled eggs and shiitake mushrooms, and then another main of granola with fruit compote and basil yoghurt. All of the mains but one are a steal at a fiver – and veggie or vegan, too, so this is definitely a brunch for the people.

Though the aubergine was tasty, I reckon I still prefer my shakshuka with eggs – but I did like the addition of guac. Surprisingly, the sides were the stars here, which is good news as you can add them to whatever you like. We were told the scrambled eggs were amazing (they’re the specialty of the chef, who trained in France) and this was absolutely correct information. Really, I don’t know how they did it, but they were a rich and creamy delight, with chives for additional zing. The shiitake mushrooms too were incredibly rich and flavourful.

The homemade granola was another standout: sweet and nutty, with toasted seeds adding a good crunch – I wish the presence of the basil in the yoghurt had been more pronounced, but it’s a really tasty breakfast option, and the fresh fruit on the top makes it feel like a proper healthy treat.

Served from 10am to 3pm, this brunch is the perfect set-up to or wind down from a walk on the Heath, which is a quick hop on and off the Overground away. What with a brunch menu like this for the mornings, a cocktail menu like that for the evening, and rumours of an evening menu on the way, we may as well just move into Heads + Tails permanently.

Heads + Tails is located at 175 West End Ln, West Hampstead, London NW6 2LH
