 An Arctic Adventure

What to expect: to dance your way across lands of ice and snow

Kick-start your weekend in style with Artful Badger’s annual black and white masked ball! Venture into the ice-cold caverns of The Vaults under Waterloo Station for an Arctic Adventure of epic proportions. For one special night, guests are invited to get their feathers, furs and fins ready to join this mischievous voyage into the cold. Party animals can expect rocking DJs, Walkabout Theatre, arts works and installations, face painting, aerialists, fire dancers and dating games that will melt frozen hearts. When it comes to costume think boisterous badgers and sensuous snow foxes!

An Arctic Adventure will take place at The Vaults on 14th November from 8pm – 4am. Tickets cost £15 - £25, available here.

 

 A Lyrical Dance Concert

What to expect: a party/comedy double act/cabaret show/ dance performance

Don’t miss this whirlwind of glamorous divas, guitar solos and gangster rappers, coming to Shoreditch Town Hall this week! Number-by- ridiculous-number, Gillie Kleiman, Sara Lindstorm and guest performer Eleanor Sikorski take the lyrics to chart hits by everyone from Mariah Carey to Jay Z and dance them out – turning them, lifting them and throwing them up in the air. Jam-packed with joyful irreverence and serious fun, A Lyrical Dance Concert is a contemporary dance performance with DIY glamour! In this show, pop music belongs to the people and it can what we want it to do! So get your glad rags on, grab a pal and a drink and have a giggle!

A Lyrical Dance Concert is on at Shoreditch Town Hall from 13th – 14th November. Tickets cost £11, available here.

 

 EFG London Jazz Festival

What to expect: one of the best jazz festivals in the world

This week sees the start of the sensational EFG London Jazz Festival! Now in its 22nd year, the festival is back for a 10-day jazz extravaganza that will spread a soulful sound to all four corners of the capital!  The jam-packed programme of events and concerts includes, an opening night gala featuring a clutch of singers from Emma Smith to Jacob Bank, backed by a spectacular 40-piece orchestra. Four-time Grammy winner Stanley Clarke will be performing at Ronnie Scott’s whilst St James Theatre sees a spectacular festival show from vocalist Barb Jungr singing the songs of Nina Simone. With so much on offer, there is sure to be something for everyone so don’t miss out!

 Wet House

What to expect: a play that is strong, smart and eye-wateringly funny

Don’t miss your last chance to see Paddy Campbell’s award winning play Wet House at Soho Theatre this week! Voted one of The Guardian’s Top Ten Plays of 2013, get ready for a thrillingly funny vision of life in a homeless shelter. When Andy finishes university, he gets a job in wet house where he is thrusted into a twilight world! Here, ideas about what is right and normal have become blurred... and that’s just among the staff! Based on Campbell’s own first-hand experience of working in a wet house, this story promises to give audiences a laugh-out-loud theatre experience!

 A Midsummer Night’s Dream (As You Like It)

What to expect: an enchanting retelling of a Shakespeare classic

This week, Russia’s most ingeniously creative director, Dmitry Krymov stages William Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ at the Barbican! In this magical story anything is possible... from towering puppets and an opera singer to ballerinas and a performing dog! This enchanting interpretation focuses on the ‘rude mechanicals’ who are trying to perform the tragedy of Pyramus and Thisbe for an audience of restless dignitaries. However, mayhem ensues as the troupe of amateur actors struggle with the depiction of the ill-fated lovers. Definitely one for the cultural calendar, Krymov skilfully conceives spectacles of scale, invention and wonder that promise to delight audiences of all ages!
