This Week, 18th – 24th November

18 November 2013 Charlie Kenber

Our pick of five unusual events to try out this week

Choosing from London’s vast array of cultural offerings can be tricky at the best of times. That’s why every week we’re putting together five that caught our eye: from a Jewish-themed football exhibition to a competition for theatre tickets, these events are sure to get your appetite well and truly whetted.

On the Edge

A four-day festival of world jazz, On the Edge promises to keep you so far from your seat back that you’ll be dancing! The festival celebrates the great and good of the East London music scene, featuring the Grand Union Orchestra amongst many others. As well as enjoying the music, events allow you to join in with a jam session, and dance alongside the artists! To top it all off the festival takes place in the beautiful Wilton’s Music Hall – the oldest surviving hall of its kind in the world. Built during the 1850s the acoustic and intimacy of the venue are perfectly suited to a night of world jazz!

On the Edge takes place 21st – 24th November at Wilton’s Music Hall. Tickets £8-16 and available here.

Trout Stanley

This new play at the Southwark Playhouse charts the story of a pair of Canadian twins with a tragic past. Having lost their triplet at birth and their mother at their twentieth birthday, the pair now have to grapple with a serial killer and nomadic cop killer, Trout Stanley. Although the play runs until 7th December, we’re giving away a pair of tickets – so make sure to enter before the 25th November! The play was described by the New York Times as ‘hysterically funny…a deliciously lyrical piece of Canadian Gothic”, so make sure to check it out!

Trout Stanley plays at the Southwark Playhouse until 7th December. Enter our ticket competition here!

Floridita

After all that partying, why not let your hair down? A lovely club in central London dedicated to everything Cuban, Floridita without doubt makes some of the best cocktails in the area. Plus on thursday night this week the club will be taken over by their Rock ‘n’ Roll Circus – the perfect opportunity to slip into your blue suede shoes and your leather jacket and hit the dance floor! With live music from a range of tribute acts as well as up and coming artists, this is set to be a night to remember!

Floridita’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Circus takes place on Thursday night from 8pm. Entry is free! Further details here.

Four Four Jew

This brilliantly-named exhibition explores the untold story of Jews and football. It brings together memorabilia, rare objects and film footage as well as interactive features to unpack the link between the beautiful game and Jewish identity. The exhibition caters for all the ages, with exhibition trails available for everyone to take part in. So head over to the Jewish Museum for a truly insightful experience!

Four Four Jew continues at the Jewish Museum until 23rd February 2014. Further information available here.

Southbank Centre Christmas Market

Yes it’s still November and Christmas is over a month away, but who cares! Get yourself down to the Southbank for this traditional German Christmas Market. The fair takes over the whole stretch from Waterloo Bridge to the London Eye, so don’t miss out on your fill of “Glühwein” (German Mulled Wine), Bratwurst, roasted nuts and gingerbread hearts, and get your Christmas shopping done early whilst you're at it! There are a total of eighty wooden chalets to complete the aestethic and leave you feeling whole-heartedly Christmassy. Plus, choir appearances are scheduled throughout the month!

The Market is open daily until 24th December, and is completely free! Further information available here.
