This Week 19th – 25th January 2015

19 January 2015 Laura Stevens

It’s Burns Night this week so get ready to get dancing that ceilidh!

Losers by Tit4Twat
What to expect
: In their own words, “stupidity and real violence guaranteed”

Losers is taking the ubiquitous reality show TV format to a new level. They have four desperate reality TV rejects who have created the ultimate way to convince casting directors they’ve got what to takes to grace Hello! and OK! for years to come. Audience members are given electronic voting handsets and the wannabes have eight rounds to prove their worth in the delectable world of ‘reality’. Coming from a recently graduated theatre company this performance promises to interrogate the dubious and shady ethics between contestants and audiences.

Losers will be at the Sewing Room, The Rag Factory, 16-18 Heneage St every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9 January – 1 February.

The Polar Bears Go Wild
What to expect:
A trip into the unknown for the bravest, but smallest explorers

For the very little readers of London Calling, or the parents of five year olds or under, there’s a show just for you! Watch the intrepid two polar bears go exploring on the adventure of a lifetime and who knows what they’ll get up to! Bring your skis/snowshoes/tractor and accompany them on their journey, and make sure you bring enough sandwiches to last the voyage!

The Polar Bears Go Wild will be at the Unicorn Theatre, Southward until 25 Jan. Suitable for 2+.

Burns Night Ceilidh
What to expect:
“London’s finest ceilidh band” bringing in Burns Night

A fabulous way to celebrate Burns Night and you’ll also be helping a fantastic cause simultaneously. Streetwise Opera is inviting all abilities to learn ceilidh dancing with a friendly tutor. Of course, it will be accompanied by a special Burns Night haggis, neeps and tatties and some drinks to help get your dancing shoes on. All the proceeds will go towards Streetwise Opera’s nationwide work with people who have experienced homelessness.

Burns Night Ceilidh is on 22 January at Cecil Sharp House, 2 Regent’s Park Road.

Grimm Dinner by Skylodge
What to expect:
Fairytale dining complete with magical cocktails and winter warming Grimm grub

If since seeing Into the Woods you’ve been craving some fantastical escapism then the Grimm Dinner at Stage 3, Hackney Empire could be exactly what the Fairy Godmother ordered. Climb the beanstalk to enter the enchanted forest and discover fairy tale inspired cocktails and food even more promising than Jack’s enchanted beans. Costumes are actively encouraged and who knows, the frog you kiss may transform into your Prince Charming in the morning?

Grimm Dinner is at Stage 3, 291 Mare Street every Friday and Saturday night from 23 Jan to 7 February.

Paul Muldoon’s new work
What to expect:
The latest from the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet

Paul Muldoon’s new collection, One Thousand Things Worth Knowing, will be presented at Keats House this week. This is the award winning Irish poet’s first collection to be published since his mentor, Seamus Heaney, died in 2013. Hailed for its complexity, these poems present linguistic challenges that will leave a lasting impression on the reader.

The reading will take place at Keats House, Keats Grove on 20 January.
