This Week June 12-18

12 June 2017 Will Rathbone

Well – what a weekend! After the events of last week, we’re here to present a selection of the finest cultural distractions London has to offer. Whatever else may be happening, there will always be music, art, theatre, pop-ups, museum lates and all the other marvelous events that our capital churns out on a daily basis. It’s what life’s all about really. Seatbelts on, it’s a heck of a week we’ve got ready for you.

Rose Matefeo is Finally Dead

Rose Matefeo’s comedy show took the Edinburgh Fringe by storm last summer and, having already played here earlier in the year, she returns for another stint at the Soho Theatre. The show centres around Rose’s plans for her own funeral, but it’s far from a morbid experience. Rose is a whirlwind of charisma – she’s already an established personality in her homeland of New Zealand – and her infectious show takes in gendered children’s toys, impressions and lightning-fast segues. It’s a near-certainty you’ll leave grinning and happier than before you entered. Catch her now before she really hits the big-time.

Rose Matefeo is Finally Dead is at Soho Theatre from June 15-17. Tickets are £14.

Belle and Sebastian

Belle and Sebastian have been writing joyful, rainbow-tinted pop songs for 11 years now, and they’re bringing their effervescent music to the Royal Hospital Chelsea for an outdoor concert. The charming surroundings of the historic Royal Hospital play host to a series of outdoor concerts for the second year running, and the Scottish songsmiths are a perfect fit for the occasion, with their Talking Heads-esque live shows a delight to behold. For inspiration, take a listen to their debut album Tigermilk right now, and let that warm fuzzy feeling take a hold of you.

Belle and Sebastian are playing at the Royal Hospital Chelsea on June 15. Tickets are £45.

RA Summer Exhibition

Here’s to the RA’s Summer Exhibition. It’s a glorious celebration of the arts – over 12,000 artists submit for the show, and a mammoth curatorial exercise gradually whittles the works down to a mere 1,200. Amateurs hang next to YBAs, sculptures sit amongst abstract works, which themselves nestle up against textile art. With architecture and video installations also joining the party, it’s a terrific display of creation that is truly accessible. You just can’t beat it, so you might as well join it.

The Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition runs from June 13 – August 20. Tickets are £14, and include a printed list of works.

National Army Museum’s Feminist Late

On a slightly different note, the National Army Museum is hosting their first ever Late opening – themed around the role of women in the army. Shockingly, although it’s been a century since women have been able to join the army, 2016 was the year the ban on women in combat roles was finally lifted. This year sees the first women finish their training and take up combat roles in the army. The late explores the effect of feminism on the army, with talks from women who currently serve and a discussion about the impact of WWI on women’s votes.

The National Army Museum’s Feminist Late takes place on June 14. Tickets are £12.

Floating Fitness

To finish, one of those pop-up scenarios that London delivers so well: Merchant Square in Paddington is hosting a week of fitness classes at the Floating Pocket Park on the Grand Union Canal. Taking place throughout the day, from June 12-18, you can enjoy pilates, yoga, meditation and paddleboarding classes all for free. If the sun shines for us next week, it’s an ideal destination for some lunch-break activities.

Floating Fitness takes place at Merchant Square, Paddington, from June 12 – 18. Entry is free!
