Top 5 Alternative Bank Holiday Plans

20 August 2015 Imogen Greenberg

If Carnival isn’t for you, then London Calling has a round up of alternative plans for the bank holiday weekend. With film, theatre, exhibitions and markets, this is a cultural round up that offers something a little different (and a little less nocturnal) for the long weekend.

Last Chance – Against Captain’s Orders

This hugely successful partnership between the National Maritime Museum and Punchdrunk Enrichment (sister company to Punchdrunk, with a focus on children’s experiences) is reaching the end of its residency. The bank holiday weekend is the last chance to take your children on a ‘Journey into the Unchartered’, as performance and storytelling take over from the conventional museum experience. Audiences join the crew of the HMS Adventure, stepping in to the heart of the action, and through doorways to other times and other worlds, experiencing history as never before. It promises to be exciting, enlightening, and just a little bit dangerous.

Last Chance – Riviera Style

The Fashion and Textile Museum’s summer exhibition is bursting with colour, sunlight and a taste of the south of France, all in the middle of London. Exploring resort and swimwear style, this is fashion at its most fun, with bright beachwear including swimsuits, sarongs, bikinis and burkinis. A trip down memory lane, it spans from the 19th century to the present, with retro offerings from Blackpool to Brighton, and Skegness to Southend, via the Cote d’Azure. You can read London Calling’s round up of the exhibition here.

Film 4 FrightFest

Every bank holiday weekend, Film4 present an antidote to the riot of summer colours over at Carnival, with FrightFest, the dark heart of cinema in the UK. Now in its 15th year, they’re being hosted by Vue Leicester Square in the heart of the West End, with a Main Screen and three Discovery Screens for those hidden gems. Whether you’re a die-hard horror fan, or just looking for something a bit different, this one’s for you.

All Female Tempest, Camden Fringe

Get Over It Productions returns with another all-female version of Shakespeare, this time taking on The Tempest at the Etcetera Theatre, as part of the Camden Fringe festival. This gothic version of Shakespeare  pairs the classic text with Get Over It’s strong tradition of physical theatre, and their unique style; it’s sure to be a thoughtful re-interpretation, and will likely hold a few surprises.

The Tempest is at the Etcetera Theatre from the 28th-30th August. For more information, and to book tickets, please see the website.

London Below Market

London Below Market is all about catering to London’s underground subcultures, from punk to retro. It includes demos and performances with artists and experts, and a range of items for sale including clothing, books, jewellery and more. A ‘day of difference’, there’s something for every alternative bank holiday-er out there.

London Below Market is on 30th August, and runs from 12 – 6 at Epic Dalston, 13 Stoke Newington Rd, London N16 8BH.
