Top Five: Art Apps

26 November 2013 Mary Howell

With 7 out of 10 people in the UK now owning smart phones, it’s about time we started filling them up with the best apps around!

Vusiem - Free

Vusiem eh? We see what they’ve done there. As museum lovers, we also understand that it can be tiring sorting your mummies from your Aztec gold in the search for 16th century Japanese erotica. You guessed it, this is the must have guide to The British Museum, and with over 800,000 objects on show, it’s easy to get your head in a spin! Highlighting 800 of the venue’s most fascinating pieces, Vusiem is the most extensive collection of highlights outside the official website.

Planned a visit? Use the tags to find the exact location for what you’re after. In a rush? A top 20 tour’ll do the trick. Game for a browse? Flick through and ‘favourite’ objects, keeping tabs of items you’ve seen and make the most of your visit. Moreover, facts, features, descriptions, images, quizzes and audio in text tours means this is the go to app for all your British Museum needs.

National Theatre - Free

In addition to the myriad of 50th anniversary celebrations at The National Theatre, they’ve only gone and treated us to an app jam packed with exclusive goodies! Have a rummage through this treasure chest and find hundreds of photographs of stage sets, costumes, rehearsals productions and annotated scripts from times gone by. Flick through famous actors that have graced the stage and delve into the minds of the directors on the night; what were they really thinking just before the curtain went up?

This interactive timeline showcases just how much the National has contributed to theatre in London, and across the world, over the last 50 years. Happy birthday NT, here’s to another 50 to come!
