Top Five Christmas Shows

15 November 2013 Mary Howell

Whether it’s a laugh, a cry, a dance or an ‘it’s behind you!’ you’re after, London Calling’s got the best of ‘em this Christmas.

LITTLE ONES – Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

Things are about to get Curiouser and curiouser at the Polka Theatre...

Tumble down the rabbit hole on a magical journey into Lewis Carroll’s classic. Featuring original songs and stunning staging, join Alice on a thrilling, enchanting adventure through Wonderland. Music, madness and mystery await those ages 6+ in an adaptation full of imagination and laughter. Watch With Baby performances will also be running so the whole family, whatever their age, can enjoy the show.

PANTO – Aladdin

Sequins, celebs and cheap laughs - If you’re partial to a bit of panto campery, you won’t be new to the New Wimbledon Theatre’s annual festivities.  Known as the home of London Pantomime, Pamela Anderson, Dame Edna and David Hasselhoff have all, um, graced the stage?

There’s plenty of room for you on the magic carpet so get Jo Brand, Matthew Kelly and TV dancers Flawless to scooch up and settle yourself in for the ride of the year. Flying Far East to a fairytale world of glittering costumes, wonderful songs and dazzling dances, Aladdin is sure to delight the whole family.

REEL TO STAGE – Let the Right One In

Swedish art house vampire horror meets the stage in the National Theatre of Scotland’s cult adaptation.

Rather than revelling in gruesome deaths and predictable victims, this peculiar fairytale leads you into a mystical place where kindred spirits and unexpected friendships blossom. Already heralded as a must-see production, praised directors John Tiffany and Steven Hogget have crafted this enchanting, brutal coming of age story into one of the most anticipated stage shows this Christmas.

ALTERNATIVE - Fuerzabruta

Armed with a fistful of rave reviews, it’s no wonder this theatrical explosion of dance, sounds and stunts left thousands disappointed after sell out shows last year. Fuerzabruta, meaning brute force, incorporates men bursting through moving walls with performers gyrating in fish tanks above audiences and a host of other eye-popping sensory stunts.

With a heavy soundtrack, this three-dimensional performance will take you on a surreal, electrifying ride. Dance, laugh and gasp at an all-standing, all-thumping, all-dancing extravaganza at Camden’s Roundhouse.

THE WHOLE FAMILY – Raymond Briggs’ Father Christmas

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without the man himself! Keep the dream alive this year as Raymond Briggs’ festive family favourite returns to the Lyric Hammersmith after its impressive run last year.

Enchanting, magical and beloved by generations, this warm and wonderful story springs to life 40 years after it was published. Song, live music and playful puppetry set alight a stunning, surprising show where secret doors and hidden hatches means mischief's around every corner.

Messy Play workshops after the show are full of crafts, games and fun for children too.
