Top Five Retro Fix

30 July 2015 Imogen Greenberg

There’s an ‘out with the new and in with the old’ trend taking over London, with new retro and vintage fashion outlets, bars, evening events, and food outlets popping up each year. London Calling gives you a round up of the top five for your Retro fix.

Cahoots

Speakeasy style bars have been popping up all over London for a few years, but often they’re so secret you can’t even find them! Inspired by the retro tiles of London’s Underground, Cahoots is housed in the unused Kingly Court Underground Station, which unsurprisingly you’ll never have heard of before. They’ve put so much attention in to recreating a 1940s tube stop that they’ve even sourced vintage TFL fabric for the seats, and put in a wooden escalator style staircase. Inspired by the post-war years, the cocktail menu features unusual ingredients and is served up in milk bottles and thermos flasks. The bar regularly hosts 1940s inspired singers and musicians.

For more information, please see the website.

The Candlelight Club

This pop up is dedicated to all things 1920s. In true prohibition style, the location is a secret speakeasy tucked away, the location given to you at the last minute. Each party includes a bespoke cocktail menu, and dancing is thoroughly encouraged, whether it’s to jazz bands or a vintage inspired DJ. Their events also have one-off themes and special guests. Dressing up is all part of the fun, so get out your bow ties and flapper dresses, and hit The Candelight Club like it’s 1925.

The next Candlelight Club event is on the 31st July. For more information and to book tickets, please see the website.

Swing Patrol

The calibre of jiving and jitterbugging from the rest of the gang that turns up at retro events can be high. If you’re not confident you’ll get straight in to the swing of things, then try some dancing lessons. Swing Patrol has classes across London weekly, for all abilities. This summer, they’re doing a whole series of one-off free dance class events across London, including in Spitalfields Market and the Old Bengal Bar in Shoreditch, so there’s no excuse not to head down with your dancing shoes (or two left feet).

For more information on classes, see the website. To see when the next free dance event is, click here.

Judy’s Vintage Fair

London is full of vintage fashion shops from the department store sized Blitz to the many outlets of Beyond Retro and Rokit. But the only way to really shop for vintage is to rummage and hunt, and find those hidden gems. If this sounds like the ideal way to spend a Sunday afternoon, try Judy’s Vintage Kilo Sale. With prices at just £15 per kilo, it won’t break the bank either, and the next one is coming up this weekend. They also hold furniture flea markets, so see the website for details.

The next Judy’s Vintage Fair is in East London on the 2nd August. For more details on upcoming events, please see the website.

All Star Lanes

It might not be a pop up, or housed in an up-cycled warehouse, but All Star Lanes is still the go-to for all-American fun. They have branches across London, including Stratford and Brick Lane. The bowling lanes have a retro vibe, and include shoe hire. It’s adults only after 6 pm, so head down earlier in the day with families. The décor oozes retro charm, and there are also karaoke booths so you can belt out classics. To top it off, there’s an American inspired diner menu that includes chilli cheese dogs, nachos, wings, burgers and ribs.

For more information, and to book, please see their website.
