Dulwich Picture Gallery houses one of the world's most important collections of European old master paintings of the 1600s and 1700s.

The collection is also one of the oldest in Great Britain, substantially put together in the years 1790 to 1795. The paintings are housed in the first purpose-built art gallery in England, designed by Sir John Soane in 1811.

The paintings provide a perfect introduction to art in the age of Baroque. The outstanding collection of seventeenth and eighteenth century old master paintings includes major works by Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Murillo, Poussin, Watteau, Gainsborough, Rubens, Tiepolo and Canaletto. Around three hundred and fifty works are on permanent display. The Gallery also mounts a series of international loan exhibitions, which contribute to its reputation as an important venue for art lovers.
