Still independent and run by a charitable trust, The Mayflower's surpluses have always been ploughed back into The Mayflower. In summer 2003, the theatre closed for five months for its first major refurbishment since 1987.
In 2007, the original cast-iron balcony seat frames from 1928 were re-upholstered. In 2010 a new scene dock facility opened allowing three articulated lorries to drive into the theatre and unload sets straight onto the stage. The Mayflower has always been able to handle the large scale West End transfers, but now it is a case of “No set is too big to fit here”.
The Theatre is now set for the future to cope with the new demands from ever bigger touring productions. It seems strange that it is only in the last decade or so that the theatre has become what its founders dreamt of 81 years ago. Finally, after years of struggling against the attractions of cinema and television, it has achieved its destiny as a successful home for the best in spectacular live entertainment. Audiences now number over 400,000 per year and this continues to grow and The Mayflower is still one of the top three most successful regional theatres in the United Kingdom.
